Snakebite Season is Here: PBRMC Wants You Ready to Act Fast
6/16/2026
POPLAR BLUFF, MO, June 15, 2026 - With warmer weather here, Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center is reminding residents about the crucial steps to take if they or someone they know is bitten by a snake. Snakebites are a medical emergency, and prompt treatment can help prevent serious complications and long-term injury.
PBRMC’s emergency department director, Heather Chasteen, BSN, R.N., said the team has already treated three snakebite victims this summer.
“Snakebites require immediate medical attention,” said Chasteen. “The best thing to do is stay calm, keep the affected extremity at the level of the heart and seek emergency medical treatment.”
Immediate steps to take if bitten by a snake:
- Seek emergency medical attention right away and do not drive yourself if possible.
- Keep the person calm and still, and position the bite in a neutral, comfortable position.
- Remove rings, watches, bracelets, and tight clothing before swelling starts.
- Wash the bite with soap and water.
- Cover the bite with a clean, dry dressing.
- If it can be done safely, take a photo of the snake from a distance for identification.
What not to do:
- Do not cut the wound.
- Do not use ice or immerse the area in water.
- Do not try to suck out venom.
- Do not apply a tourniquet or use electric shock or folk remedies.
- Do not drink alcohol or take pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen.
- Do not try to pick up or trap the snake.
PBRMC is equipped with experienced medical professionals ready to evaluate snakebite emergencies, provide supportive treatment, and administer antivenom when clinically indicated. The CDC notes that seeking emergency medical attention as soon as possible is important to start antivenom if needed and prevent irreversible damage.
