Finding Relief, Restoring Life: Phil Santie’s Journey with Orthopedic Care at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center

After years of chronic back pain, Malden native Phil Santie, 80, underwent back surgery earlier this year performed by orthopedic spine surgeon, Jonathan Workman, D.O., of Regional Physician Services. Santie suffered chronic pain stemming from a previous back injury and an active youth playing football and baseball. He began experiencing worsening symptoms, including nerve complications and limited circulation to his legs.
“My back had gotten to the point where the pain was constant and debilitating,” Santie said. “Dr. Workman was very polite, very informative, and took the time to explain everything. I felt confident in his care from the start.”
Dr. Workman performed a procedure to address the compressed vertebrae and nerve issues. Santie’s recovery has been steady, with significant reduction in pain. From the first appointment through recovery, Santie describes the experience as seamless and supportive.
Santie said, “The entire team was outstanding, from the front desk to the surgical staff. Everyone helped keep me calm, and I was up walking the very next day.”
Now several months into recovery, Santie reports significant improvement with no ongoing complications. While full recovery can take six to seven months, he says the results have already been life-changing.
Santie’s perspective is shaped not only by his experience as a patient, but also by his long-standing connection to PBRMC, having served on the hospital board of trustees for more than 30 years.
“I’m not saying this because I was on the board, I’m saying it because it’s true. This is a great hospital, and I would recommend the orthopedic clinic to anyone.”
Santie’s wife, Judy, also received care from Dr. Workman this year and experienced similarly positive results following treatment for sciatica and other orthopedic concerns.
