Rick Robertson’s Remarkable Recovery at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center

How specialized wound care helped restore his health and independence
POPLAR BLUFF, MO – At 65 years old, Rick Robertson is enjoying a renewed sense of independence and quality of life that he credits to the care he received at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center’s Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center.
After retiring from a home service oil company, Robertson began experiencing severe lymphedema in his lower extremities. His legs became significantly swollen, measuring between 24 and 26 inches in circumference, and developed painful, open wounds. “At one point, my feet were so swollen I couldn’t wear shoes, and I couldn’t lift my legs to get into a car,” he shared.
At the recommendation of his primary care provider, Rick sought treatment at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where he has now been receiving outpatient care for more than two years. Early in his journey, he worried that nothing would help, but he soon realized he had made the right choice while working closely with Maxine Theriot, M.D., and Megan Dunkin, FNP-C, at the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center. They helped him better understand his condition, and Rick appreciated the time they took to explain his care in a way that was clear and reassuring.
During the most challenging period of his treatment, Rick required frequent bandage changes due to heavy drainage. His wife of 34 years, Blanche, often woke throughout the night to care for him. With the support of home health visits twice a week and consistent care from the wound care team, Rick began to see steady progress.
He speaks highly of the staff, whose compassion left a lasting impression. Rick describes the entire team, including the front desk staff, as some of the kindest people he has ever met. He says over time, “they became more than caregivers; they became familiar, trusted faces.”
The Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center also played a critical role in coordinating additional care. Rick followed through on a referral to see a cardiologist. That decision proved lifesaving. Roland Njoh, M.D., interventional cardiologist with Regional Physician Services, identified blockages in Rick’s heart and placed four stents. Without that intervention, Rick believes his outcome could have been very different.
On October 31, Robertson underwent vein ablation surgery, which significantly improved circulation in his legs. Since beginning treatment, he has lost 168 pounds - much of which was excess fluid. Today, his legs have returned to a normal size, and his overall health has improved dramatically.
Robertson has regained mobility and independence. He also notes that his heart condition has improved significantly following treatment and fluid reduction. Just six months ago, he was unable to drive. Now, he looks forward to resuming activities he once loved, like fishing, and spending time with his eight grandchildren, including attending two upcoming graduations this spring.
Robertson credits the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center with transforming his life. He shares that he would not be where he is today without their dedication. He strongly encourages others not to delay care, expressing he has full confidence that few, if any, could provide a higher level of compassion and results.
