April is National Donate Life Month
4/6/2022
Each April, Donate Life America (DLA) leads National Donate Life Month (NDLM), an observance to focus national attention on the need and importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. National Donate Life Month is about the importance of registering your decision to be a donor and honoring deceased and living donors — recognizing that the generosity of donors makes saving lives through transplantation possible.
Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center is a proud partner with Mid-America Transplant, part of the DLA network. In the past three years, PBRMC had 90 patients give the gift of life as eye or tissue donors. In 2021 alone, of the 34 people who donated, up to 2,550 patient’s lives were saved with eye and organ donation.
In Missouri, there are currently 1,769 people awaiting a transplant. And more than 100,000 people across the country are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Thousands more people are waiting for lifesaving and healing cornea and tissue transplants. Because only 3 in 1000 meet criteria for an organ donation to take place, it is vitally important for everyone to register their lifesaving decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. Learning more about and considering living donation is a way you can help those waiting for a second chance at life.
Registration to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor can be done at www.SayYesGiveLife.org or in the Medical ID tab of your iPhone Health app.
To help participate in NDLM, April 22 is National Donate Life Blue & Green Day and we invite everyone to show their blue & green colors in support of the Donate Life message and mission. The Blue & Green Flag will fly throughout the month at PBRMCs campus.
