5/31/2024
POPLAR BLUFF, MO – With the arrival of warmer weather, Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center is reminding residents about the crucial steps to take if they or someone they know is bitten by a snake. Prompt and appropriate action can be lifesaving, and our hospital is prepared to provide expert medical care for snakebite victims.
PBRMC’s emergency department director, Heather Chasteen, said they’ve seen one snake bite patient so far this season.
“Prompt medical treatment is essential for snakebite victims,” said Chasteen. “By following these guidelines and seeking immediate help, patients can significantly improve their outcomes.”
Immediate Steps to Take if Bitten by a Snake:
- Stay Calm and Seek Immediate Medical Attention:
- Remain as calm and still as possible to prevent the venom from spreading more quickly through your body.
- Call emergency services immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
- Keep the Affected Area Immobilized:
- Keep the bite area at or below the level of the heart.
- Avoid moving the affected limb to slow the spread of venom.
- Remove Constrictive Items:
- Remove any rings, bracelets, watches, or tight clothing near the bite site to reduce swelling.
- Clean the Wound:
- Clean the bite area with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection.
- Identify the Snake:
- ONLY if safe to do so, take note of the snake’s appearance (color, size, and markings).
- Do not try to capture the snake.
What Not to Do:
- Do Not Cut the Wound: Cutting can cause further injury and increase the risk of infection.
- Do Not Use Ice: Ice can cause additional tissue damage and does not help reduce the venom from spreading.
- Do Not Suck Out Venom: This can lead to mouth contamination and further spread of venom.
- Do Not Drink Alcohol or Caffeinated Beverages: These can accelerate the body’s absorption of venom.
PBRMC is equipped with experienced medical professionals ready to handle snakebite emergencies and the antivenom, along with other necessary medical treatments to manage snakebite symptoms and complications.
