June Is Wound Care Awareness Month and PBRMC Aims to Educate
6/21/2022
POPLAR BLUFF, MO – The Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center is a member of the Healogics network and is helping raise awareness of the risks of chronic wounds during the ninth annual Wound Care Awareness Month.
Healogics®, established Wound Care Awareness Month in 2014 to bring attention to the growing need for wound care and nearly 7 million Americans currently living with chronic wounds. PBRMC’s Wound Center offers several advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds.
“These wounds need proper care, and the longer they go without, the greater the risk of infection, hospitalization, and even amputation,” said Megan Campbell, RN, Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center program director. “As an outpatient facility, we perform advanced procedures and high-quality care.”
Those who suffer from diabetes, heart disease, or peripheral artery disease (PAD) are at an even greater risk for health complications that stem from an untreated wound.
- One in four people living with diabetes will experience a diabetic foot ulcer.
- A quarter of people with advanced PAD may require amputation within one year due to a non-healing wound.
- For those living with heart disease, 82 percent of leg amputations are due to poor circulation of the affected limb.
Seek Continuous Care
- If you’re living with a chronic wound, there are several steps you can take to ensure it is properly cared for.
- For instance, regular foot exams can help identify an undetected wound. Check your feet regularly for any signs of wound development.
- If you or a loved one has a non-healing wound, it’s imperative to see an advanced wound care provider so you can get on the road to healing.
“Having wound care as a service for our patients, is just another way that PBRMC is bringing a holistic approach to serving our community,” said Rick Naegler, CEO.
