Vintage Postcard Brings ‘Happiness’ to PBRMC

POPLAR BLUFF, MO, March 8, 2024 – Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center (PBRMC) recently received a notable letter from Lowell Joerg, a 95-year-old assisted living resident of California, demonstrating a commitment to preserving heritage and spreading goodwill.
Joerg's letter contained a circa-1930 postcard featuring the Brandon Hospital, which he discovered during a visit to an antique store. In his accompanying letter, Joerg expressed his interest in returning the card to its place of origin, noting its potential to spark conversations about the hospital's history.
Despite a modest request for reimbursement, Joerg's primary aim was to share the joy of his find with the hospital staff. Reflecting on his late wife's playful remarks about his hobby, Joerg humorously recalled her anticipation of hearing from the recipients of his gestures.
Approaching his ninety-sixth birthday, Mr. Joerg described his hobby as a "re-distribution of happiness," recognizing the need for positivity in today's world. His thoughtful gesture serves as a reminder of the power of human kindness and connection.
Clyde Wood, PBRMC’s CEO, expressed gratitude for Joerg's gift, noting its significance in fostering community connections. Wood sent Joerg a letter back extending warm wishes and a refund for the postcard.
Brandon Hospital is one of the first hospitals in Poplar Bluff, built in 1925, and noted on the back as “Southeast Missouri’s most modern hospital with electric elevators and private telephone services. Frigidaire on each floor with a capacity of 45 beds.”
