Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Recognized Again for Chest Pain Center and Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation
6/6/2025

POPLAR BLUFF, MO, June 6, 2025 — The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has recognized Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain and those who come into the cardiac cath lab, including diagnostic catheterizations and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). PBRMC was reaccredited as a Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI and Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI through the ACC based on an onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients.
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is also known as coronary angioplasty. It is a non-surgical procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries with a balloon to relieve symptoms of heart disease or reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack.
“This accreditation is a testament to the dedication of our cardiology team—cardiologists, nurses, and techs—who consistently provide evidence-based, patient-focused care,” said Cheryl Joy, Chest Pain Coordinator at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. “By using data to drive continuous quality improvement, we ensure quality care for heart attack patients and fulfill our mission of delivering safe, quality healthcare close to home.”
Hospitals receiving accreditation from the ACC must meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria, including a multifaceted clinical process; a rigorous onsite review; monitoring for sustained success; and an organized team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff who earnestly support efforts leading to improved patient outcomes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 730,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. The most common symptom of a heart attack for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort.
“Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center has demonstrated its commitment to providing Poplar Bluff and surrounding communities with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center with Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation and Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI.”
Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms and have primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year. As required to meet the criteria of the accreditation designation, they comply with standard Chest Pain Center protocols.
Hospitals that have earned ACC Cardiac Cath Lab with PRIC Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients who require cardiac catheterization and have standardized their assessment process for patients before undergoing catheterization to ensure quality and patient safety. They ensure that care in the procedure room for sedation, infection control, radiation safety, universal protocol, and time out procedures is fully coordinated; and have mastered the appropriate transfer to a cath recovery unit to better monitor and track complications, enhance physician-to-patient communication, patient family communication, discharge instructions and follow-up information.
