PBRMC Will Continue to Provide Monoclonal Infusion as State Contract Ends
10/27/2021
POPLAR BLUFF, MO – As the state of Missouri contracts for monoclonal antibody (mAb) sites end the week of October 25, the life-saving treatment will remain available in Poplar Bluff. Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center (PBRMC) will sustain delivery of monoclonal antibody infusions for patients in the community.
“I would like to personally thank the team that implemented Governor Parson's vision and wisdom on the opening of the monoclonal antibody infusion centers around the state,” CEO Rick Naegler said. “We have been proud participants in this program and many people in our community have benefited greatly from this important treatment.”
PBRMC has provided more than 700 patients with monoclonal antibody infusions since late August. Monoclonal antibodies are administered to people who have COVID-19 symptoms or who have tested positive for COVID-19 and who have a high likelihood of being hospitalized. The primary goal is to help those people avoid hospitalization. These infusions have helped keep hundreds of people out of the hospital.
Starting Wednesday, October 27, PBRMC will resume administration of scheduled mAb infusions at the Oak Grove Campus location at 3100 Oak Grove Rd in Poplar Bluff.
“We are supporting our community to our fullest abilities,” Naegler said. “I am proud of our ability to stand up critical treatments and collaborate with other health officials for the safety and well-being of area residents.”
As the essential effort to vaccinate the public continues, monoclonal antibody treatments serve as an important tool in reducing the harms of infections that occur. For people at high-risk of developing serious illness, monoclonal antibodies can significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization. The antibody infusion is not for people who are already in the hospital because of their COVID-19 symptoms. In order to determine qualification, it must be prescribed and scheduled by a patient’s primary care physician or an infectious disease physician. The infusion is a one-time treatment and takes about three hours from start to finish.
